Why Hemp
Why do we build with hemp?
Because it’s not just a building material—it’s a better way to build.
At Belubula Hemp Homes, our journey with hemp began in 2016 when a curious client asked if it could be done. At the time, we were unsure. But once James Isaacs—our founder and licensed builder—completed formal certification in hempcrete construction, we never looked back.
Hemp has since become the backbone of our work, not because it’s trendy—but because it’s smart, sustainable, and proven. Here’s why hemp continues to shape our builds and why more clients across NSW are asking for it.

Naturally Comfortable In All Climates
Naturally Comfortable – In All Climates
Central West NSW experiences climate extremes—from scorching summers to snow in winter. Hemp’s natural thermal properties make it an ideal building solution for our region. Hempcrete walls regulate temperature by absorbing, storing, and slowly releasing heat. The result? A home that stays warm in winter, cool in summer, and costs far less to run.
Energy-Efficient = Economical
Hemp homes reduce your reliance on artificial heating and cooling. That means lower energy bills and more consistent indoor comfort without overloading the grid. Thanks to the breathable structure of hemp walls, you get insulation and ventilation in one—helping you live lighter, every day.
Naturally Termite & Fire Resistant
Hempcrete is resistant to termites, fire, and mold—without needing toxic chemical treatments. That’s good news for your family, your health, and the surrounding environment. It also means no pesticides are required during cultivation, especially important when sourcing from local growers.
We source our hemp from a trusted farm in the Hunter Valley, supporting local agriculture and clean, safe supply chains.

Carbon Negative Construction
Carbon-Negative Construction
Hemp is one of the only building materials that actively removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As the plant grows, it sequesters large amounts of CO₂—and when used in construction, that carbon is locked away in your walls for decades. Choosing hempcrete means reducing the carbon footprint of your build from day one.
Breathable Walls for Healthy Living
Hempcrete walls are vapor-permeable, meaning they allow moisture to pass through without trapping condensation. That prevents mold growth and improves indoor air quality—especially important for people with asthma, allergies, or respiratory conditions. It’s a home that breathes, just like you.
Proven Durability
Building with hemp isn’t new—it’s just rediscovered. Hemp has been used in construction for centuries, with historic examples found across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Those homes still stand today. At Belubula, we combine this time-tested material with modern techniques to deliver homes that are beautiful, resilient, and built to last.
